Helping Themselves

The God of the Bible does not help those who help themselves, that is the god of Aesop. Those who put hope and trust in themselves, rather than God, are usually on their own. Scripture says, “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” (Hebrews 11:6) I think this concept illustrates many problems in the American church today. For example, we have such great faith in medical science, that we believe healing will come from medicine. Many do not believe God heals in answer to prayer today, they assume that miracles were only signs for those ancient times and they justify it by mocking faith healers as frauds. Oh, they may pray, but it is for the doctors to have wisdom or find the problem. If you asked most church goers, “Do you believe God will heal in answer to prayer, what would they say?” How many would pray before going to the doctor and wait for an answer, first? I believe this illustrates that our faith in medical science exceeds our faith in God. Is God merciful, clearly, and He can use medicine and doctors, but where is our faith and priority.

When faced with a need that dictates a decision, how do we respond? Do we first analyze the pros and cons and make a decision, or do we seek God’s guidance. The bible says to pray and ask for healing. We are given an example of a woman who sought the help of doctors first. “And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.” Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.” (Mark 5:25-29) Have we subverted our faith in God and what the Bible clearly says, because we consider God’s attention in our advanced society unnecessary? Is this miracle for the woman meant to increase our faith in God, or show us that God only acts when we have exhausted our means of helping ourselves. Clearly, it is meant to increase our faith in God. Yeshua’s reply was, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.” (Mark 5:34)

This is not just about health, it’s about every aspect of life, our decisions, pursuits, and trials. Faith pleases God, looking to ourselves through self reliance does not. Those in the Bible who relied upon themselves were opposed to God, like Pharaoh, Saul, Esau, Ananias and Sapphira, Herod, and Pilot, just to name a few. Many times Yeshua said, “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” (Luke 11:9-10; Matt. 18:19; John 14:13; Mark 11:24; John 15:16) Do not be deceived by worldly wise men who would lead us away from God Almighty; build up your faith in God, for scripture says, “The righteous will live by faith.” (Romans 1:17)
