What’s in a Name

We have the gift of speech, though it was scrambled at the tower of Babel. It’s not just communication, which animals do also. We gave names to the animals and haven’t stopped naming all sorts of things we find interesting. We name our nations and countries, states, cities, giving labels for the spaces within our boundaries. We name our children with special care and often add nicknames denoting familiarity. I added a title to name this post, though it’s in question format. We name our sports teams, which has become a topic of dispute, recently. In naming a club, team, or group which we support and follow we distinguish it with honor, esteem and words that convey qualities of success, strength, victory and championship. The names are meant to inspire new followers to join with us. Names are often taken from history, most States are named with native american words. Our ancestors names are often carried down through generations.

A small group of protesters have taken it upon themselves to judge all names in our two hundred years of existence through a specific political filter they have designed themselves, most recently. Their purpose is to tear down certain selected designations so their power and authority may be established and expanded. Consider the audacity and arrogance these people embody. They are not seeking to create, but destroy that which others have made and named with honor. What right or authority do they rely upon to interfere in the affairs of others? Their tools and weapons are names themselves, they label anyone they target with slurs, smears, curses, accusation, charges, slander, and otherwise portray these unfortunate targets as enemies of the entire society and public. They have infiltrated the largest media entities who assist and carryout their political purposes.

Inspite of legal defeat in the court and sound legislation that protects copyrights, branding, and trademarks these naming bigots carryout their work in the public arena of ideas. If naming can be infringed, what else can be destroyed and silenced? Is a name more than a symbol or abbreviation of an idea? With the power to overthrow names, perhaps entire ideas can be torn down, refashioned or replaced with others that could not stand on their own merits, but may be forced into place by these outlaws and criminals. What can be done? Why is this injustice permitted? Is a lie more powerful than the truth? This was God’s answer to such people in Jerusalem. “Therefore hear the word of the Lord, you scoffers who rule this people in Jerusalem. You boast, “We have entered into a covenant with death, with the realm of the dead we have made an agreement. When an overwhelming scourge sweeps by, it cannot touch us, for we have made a lie our refuge and falsehood our hiding place.” So this is what the Sovereign Lord says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic. I will make justice the measuring line and righteousness the plumb line; hail will sweep away your refuge, the lie, and water will overflow your hiding place. Your covenant with death will be annulled; your agreement with the realm of the dead will not stand. When the overwhelming scourge sweeps by, you will be beaten down by it.” (Isaiah 28:14-18)
