Jehu and Resolve

This morning I was seeking and inquiring of the Lord and I heard the name Jehu. In 2 Kings chapters nine and ten the story of Jehu is recorded. It begins with Jehu who was the commander of the army of Israel. The prophet Elisha summoned a man from the company of the prophets to go and anoint Jehu King over Israel with a charge to destroy all the decendents of Ahab and the priests of Baal. After the private anointing by the prophet, scripture records, “When Jehu went out to his fellow officers, one of them asked him, “Is everything all right? Why did this maniac come to you?” “You know the man and the sort of things he says,” Jehu replied. “That’s not true!” they said. “Tell us.” Jehu said, “Here is what he told me: ‘This is what the Lord says: I anoint you king over Israel.'” They quickly took their cloaks and spread them under him on the bare steps. Then they blew the trumpet and shouted, “Jehu is king!” (2 Kings 9:11-13)

The story continues with the fulfillment of specific prophecy against Ahab, Jezebel and their decendents. Moreover, we see that Jehu is resolute in his charge to rid Isreal of Ahab’s idolatry of Baal. He finds support from the people of Israel and gives credit to God’s declaration against Ahab through the prophet Elijah. The very gruesome end of Jezebel is a stark representation of specific prophecy fulfilled with precision. Jehu acts deceptively to gather and trap all the priests of Baal, saying, “Ahab served Baal a little; Jehu will serve him much.” (2 Kings 10:18) He calls a great assembly of priests for Baal and says, “Look around and see that no one who serves the Lord is here with you—only servants of Baal.” (2 Kings 10:23). Then they are slaughtered according to the law, God’s word.

To the lost, this is all very barbaric and they might see it as a critique of the God of the Bible. In their hypocrisy they ignore the atrocities of socialist communists, dictators, and other tyrants who killed millions and continue today. We live in a very tolerant Judeo-christian country where much wickedness is tolerated, to our shame. We do not kill people except by strict thorough legal process in the courts. However, this story of Jehu has relevance for holding people to account for their actions. I’m not suggesting any violence such as the anarchist rioters and their supporters are committing today. Justice must be carried out, through legal, legislative and judicial processes. Those who attempted insurrection via a coop against President Trump should be held to account. Those who are wounding our police and damaging private and public property should be prosecuted under the law. Media executives and Politicians who lie or foment riots clearly, repeatedly and with malice, should be held to account.

Where men fail, God is perfect and consistent. He works things out according to His will and purposes. He is fully able to restrain and remove evil actors while protecting His people. (2 Peter 2:9; 2 Thess. 2:9-12; Rom. 9: 22-23). God will be shown to be just and righteous in every circumstance and with respect to each person every created. The wicked, idolatrous, rebellious, and liars will reap that which they have sown. God is the judge of all and we must seek His mercy, for we all have fallen short of His perfect standard. Only in Yeshua, Messiah will we find righteousness, salvation, and resolve to follow through in His calling.
