Believers should understand this concept, even if they seldom practice it. “Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” (Colossians 3:1-2) I take “things above” to mean things eternal which includes all things Spiritual, God focused, and other than temporal or physical. It does include people because everyone will continue after this earthly life either in Heaven with God or in Hell separated from the source of all goodness and love. What I’m talking about is not merely controlling your thoughts to periodically think about religious matters, like a break at work to think about your plans, the weekend or a vacation.
When you set your heart and mind upon a thing eternal you are entering the realm of the Spirit, physical laws, limits and effects do not apply. Eternal things have transcendent enduring purpose and result. Prophecy is Spiritual and therefore eternal. This is an eternal conversation, pursuing revealed truth, hearing God and receiving prophetic insight about the future, yet to come. This requires faith and an intimate relationship with God. Some believers may only remember connecting to God in their salvation experience or infrequent times of worship or desperate prayer, but He said, “The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life.” (John 6:63)
Yeshua, (Jesus’ Hebrew name) said,
“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.” (John 15:16) The fruit that will last is eternal. Yeshua wants us to ask for eternal results, through His eternal Spirit empowerment. He talked about the indwelling Holy Spirit, “Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” (John 7:38-39) We have an eternal connection with the infinite all powerful God, our part is to simply believe and receive by setting our heart (affections) and mind (will) upon Him. “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.” (John 14:16-17) “Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.” (John 14:21) Is Yeshua showing Himself to you through your eternal perspective? Let us open our heart and mind to receive and enter into an eternal participation through the Spirit.
