Super Powers

This morning on a cereal box, I read about a childrens activity for drawing characters with super powers. I was reminded how popular this concept as become from the Xmen movies to many TV series, such as Hero’s. We saw a new movie just recently that had a little twist, but the concept with variations of powers was still the central idea. Superman was created in 1938, but he was unique and from another world. The intriguing aspect of today’s heroes is that they each have a different super power, some more powerful than others, and they live among in a society of powerless people.

What hit me right off was this concept is not new, but really as ancient as the first century. God gave gifts (supernatural powers) to His children when He imparted the indwelling Holy Spirit to every Believer. The gifts of the Spirit are discussed and described in detail in Acts, Corinthians, and referred to in many other books of the Bible. They are not like the super powers in movies or TV and I hope you will not consider my comparison sacrilegious. The enemy as made a career of knocking off God’s creative acts. C. S. Lewis’ character, Screwtape, explained to his nephew Wormwood, in the “Screwtape Letters”, that the enemy has no power to creat anything, unique or otherwise, but can only twist and distort that which God has made. Then He gives an illustration that while the world is filled with all manor of the melody, harmony, tempo, rhythm and delight of music; Hell is filled only with dreadful, horrific, unceasing noise, as silence is soothing. So, there really is no comparison, but only an acknowledgment of God’s design, and that warped by the world.

The world considers the Bible a myth and suggests all things Spiritual or miraculous as evidence thereof. However, the Bible has been subjected to more scrutiny including, historical, scientific and archaeological analysis than any other book, and remains the best selling book of all time. The Spiritual aspects are no more subject to science than love, art, the meaning of life, or life itself. The Apostle Paul gives a summary of Spiritual gifts saying, “For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.” (Romans 12:3-7)

In God’s family none are without a “Super Power”. The gifts are not for us and our benefit, but for the entire body of Believers. God gives us faith to believe and upon that same faith rests the nature and operation of Spiritual gifts. Therefore, the gifts are dependent on and effected through the Spirit. Physical and mental rationalization is limited, so much so, that it is total blindness when considering the eternal, infinite characteristics, acts, message, and Sovereignty of Almighty God. In His great mercy, He sent His Son, as a human, to convey fully His love and salvation to all who believe. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.” (John 3:16-18) Perhaps you will seek God, give the Bible an unbiased read, and find that He will give you not only super powers, but eternal life in His presence.
