“As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations.” He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed—the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not.” (Romans 4:17)
God spoke to Abraham and gave him amazing promises which Abraham believed. I wonder if God speaks to us and makes promises to us which are unlocked by faith or left hidden by doubt. There is doubt that God speaks and can give anything to us. However, scripture says, “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.” (Hebrews 1:1) The Son said, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” (John 10:27)
God is described as one who gives life to the dead. What greater gift is there to a dead corpse than life? He is the God who causes existence from nothingness. What an infinite difference there is between existing and not? Every person ever born is not just a son or daughter, but a unique and precious creation of God. Even the lost are made in His image and given gifts. Scripture says, “Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! “Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?” “Who has ever given to God, that God should repay them?” For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen.” (Romans 11:33-36) In this unlimited reality of God we understand our finite existence. “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10) Given that He has prepared works for us to do, given us spiritual gifts, and adopted us into His family, I believe He gives us a destiny among the great, if we accept it through faith. Faith pleases God; He said, “I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 8:11) Yeshua marveled at faith demonstrated even by gentiles. (Luke 7:9; Matt. 15:28) All things are possible to him who has faith. (Mark 9:23)
We must wait on God in faith and listen to His word and Spirit, but we must not presume or pursue our self interest and expect to receive anything from God.
