Reward From God

We know that God originated the concept of a reward. It’s not something that is or can be earned per se, though it follows from certain action or effort like compensation, but a reward is given rather than earned. If you find and return someone’s cat the owner may give you a reward. I’ve never heard of a lost and found business or a position of pet finder. The Lord is a rewarder of those who seek Him. What is the reward? It is hard to say as a glimpse of Himself would be worth more than the entire world. In ancient Greece the Champions were given a wreath made of leaves. Rewards can have intangible worth, like the Oscar for achievement in film that is merely a small statue, but usually opens many doors of opportunity and favor.

It is the action and effort of seeking which God rewards. Paul said to the Athenians, “God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.'” (Acts 17:27-28) God desires that we seek, ask, and look for what we need from Him. Yeshua says about heavens reward, “Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. “Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city.” (Revelation 22:12-14) Eternal life is God’s reward to the faithful and it cannot be earned, but is a gift in recognition of faith.

The rewards in this life are peace, blessings and rest, among other things. Scripture teaches, “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” (Matthew 6:1-4) God is very generous and freely gives to us each day everything we need. He rewards us often and in many ways. “In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat— for he grants sleep to those he loves. Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.” (Psalm 127:2-3) If you want God’s reward the writer of Hebrews gives a starting point, “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” (Hebrews 11:6)
